Top 5 Legal Directories
And Lawyer Review Sites

Knowing you need a lawyer is the easiest part of your legal situation. You don’t need to be intimidated by the process of finding and hiring a lawyer. There are plenty of legal directories and lawyer review sites to help you search for a lawyer to represent you.

However, not all of these legal directories and review sites are equal. Some don’t give you the amount of information needed to make a short list of creditable, great lawyers. So, before you click on any legal directory, it’s best to take a look at the top 5 legal Directories and lawyer review sites.

1. Avvo

Avvo, started in 2006, is like other legal directories where it rates lawyers. Avvo’s lawyer rating depends on a special mathematical model it uses. For instance, it considers different factors like education, the lawyer’s years of experience, board certification and disciplinary history to access every lawyer. The mathematical model also factors in clients opinion and peer rating systems.

In addition, you can view each lawyer’s profile. The profile has information about a lawyer’s background, experience, disciplinary history and client reviews. If you like to ask a legal question, Avvo gives you that option. All questions are answered by lawyers with profiles on the site.

2. LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell’s Lawyers.com

Based on the premise that many people have legal questions, but aren’t sure where to go for answers, this legal directory is a free service. Now, this site is specifically designed to aid small businesses and people. It lists profiles of over 1 million lawyers and law firms around the world. It also has a discussion board for people and lawyers wanting to talk about different legal topics.

In addition, it posts legal information like articles and a page of a glossary of legal terms.

3. Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings

Martindale-Hubbell has a separate site for peer review ratings based on professional ability, ethical standards and lawyers’ evaluations. Ratings in this site typically occur about three years after a lawyer is first admitted to the bar. Martindale-Hubbell surveys lawyers across the country and in multiple jurisdictions. Also, lawyers surveyed are in the same field as the persons they are surveying. For instance, if a tax lawyer in your city receives surveys only about tax lawyers in that area.

When you search for a lawyer in this site, you’ll notice he or she is rated from one to five with five being the highest. Each lawyer is rated on his or her legal experience, analytical capabilities, legal knowledge, judgment and communication ability. Now, analytical capabilities just refer to the lawyer’s ability to analyze legal issues and apply his or her knowledge of the subject. Communication ability refers to his or her ability to communicate convincingly and with credibility.

It’s important to note that if you see a lawyer’s rating from 1 to 2.9, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t contact him or her. The lawyer has met the General Ethical Standing’s high criteria.

4. State Bar of Arizona

You shouldn’t let the name fool you. Regardless of where you live, you can still use the State Bar of Arizona site to find a lawyer. You can perform a broad search based on where you live and the type of legal subject area or try a more detailed search. You typically receive results for lawyers where you live. The website also tells you where the lawyer has been suspended because he hasn’t paid his dues or inactive for another reason like being retired.

The website also offers articles to inform you about how to protect yourself from a non-lawyer and easy ways to get legal help. If you have any concerns about your lawyer, the website has a section devoted to answering your questions. For example, it has information regarding fee disputes, how to file a dispute with your lawyer and frequently asked questions on the topic.

5. RocketLawyer

RocketLawyer is different from the other top five legal directories and peer review websites. You can use the site’s database to find a lawyer who works with RocketLawyer. If you’re a member, you receive legal help at a pre-negotiated fee. The second option allows you to search for a lawyer via its national lawyer database.

You simply type in information such as the practice area and your state. The search results list lawyers with their pictures and profile information. It even includes the lawyer’s hourly rate.

The site also offers free legal documents as well as free legal information. For instance, it provides step-by-step instructions that allow you to customize documents according to your needs. You can contact one of the “on call” lawyers to review your document making sure it’s correct. The review is completed at no additional cost.

Using legal directories and lawyer review sites help you find the right lawyer to represent you. Instead of looking in the phonebook or wasting time asking your friends and family, you can simply search the websites for a list of lawyers. In addition, you also receive information you normally would find when asking family or flipping through the telephone book.

Whether you prefer a legal directory or lawyer review site is up to you. Each type offers benefits. For instance, you may want to know how lawyers rate their colleagues. If you’re interested in a legal directory, you may choose one with legal information or a way to ask questions. You can also use the legal directories and lawyer review sites to narrow down your list of lawyers. However, it’s important that you know which are considered the best, top five legal directories and lawyer review websites.
